Note. Fighting weights are listed or division figures and the body-fat numbers are estimates. The verdict is not an estimate — it rests on a failed test and a commission ruling. See the methodology page for how we judge.
Alistair Overeem’s nickname was a joke about his own body. He fought as a light heavyweight from 1999 to 2007 and then as a heavyweight through 2022, and turned up in the new division visibly rebuilt. The fan name for the new version was “Ubereem.”
The test
On 4 April 2012, before a UFC 146 title fight, he returned a testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio of 14 to 1, against an allowed limit of 6 to 1. On 24 April the Nevada State Athletic Commission voted unanimously to deny his licence for nine months, backdated to the test. He lost the title shot. His explanation was a doctor-prescribed “anti-inflammatory medication that was mixed with testosterone.”
Confirmed.
The numbers
The interesting figure is not his FFMI, it is the direction of travel: a fighter who made 205 lbs for eight years and later fought at 256 lbs (116 kg) at 6’4”. Adult men do add weight moving up a division, and some of that is ordinary maturation from his early twenties onward. Fifty pounds of it, carried at a fighting condition, is not ordinary.
The T/E ratio is what settles it, and it settles only 2012. His earlier transformation has no test attached to it either way.
Verdict
Confirmed — by the 2012 result and Nevada’s ruling. The transformation that made his nickname predates the failed test, and this page does not pretend the test dates it.
