Charlie Hunnam: natty or not?

Likely natty Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy, King Arthur, Pacific Rim

Short answer. Verdict: likely natty. At the peak physique on this page, Charlie Hunnam is 6'0" (182.9 cm) and 190 lbs (86 kg) at roughly 10% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 23.0, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

No official record settles this. What follows is opinion and analysis based on public numbers — how we judge.

Note. Every number below is our own read of reported figures and photos, not a lab measurement — treat weights and body-fat estimates as ranges, not decimals. See the methodology page for how we judge.

Charlie Hunnam’s billed height is usually 6’1” (185 cm), but a detailed height-tracking analysis puts him closer to a “weak” 6’0” (182.9 cm) in the morning. We use the shorter, less flattering figure here, since a shorter height only makes his later FFMI numbers look bigger, not smaller — the conservative direction for this kind of case.

The timeline. In Queer as Folk (2000), a couple of years before he says he started training seriously, he reads as lean and unmuscled — call it 165 lbs (75 kg) at roughly 12% body fat, an estimate from screen appearance rather than a sourced number. By Sons of Anarchy (2011), eight years into training, he had added visible size, landing around 185 lbs (84 kg) at a similar leanness. His biggest, leanest build came for King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017): reports put him at 185–190 lbs (84–86 kg) around 8–12% body fat, what one write-up calls his “proper warrior” look.

That is not the whole story. Hunnam has repeatedly cut down to a genuinely skinny frame for dramatic roles: he told press he dropped from 185 lbs to 145 lbs (84 kg to 66 kg) for The Lost City of Z, then landed at the same 145 lbs (66 kg) again for Papillon, telling ET he started that second cut around 180 lbs. Most recently he lost 30 lbs (13.6 kg) to play Ed Gein in Monster: The Ed Gein Story (2025); the article doesn’t give exact before/after numbers, so we’re not inventing one. A body that swings this hard in both directions, and keeps landing back at the same skinny floor weight, is not a body being held in permanent, unexplained bulk — that cuts against the “maintaining size with no training stimulus” flag this site watches for.

The math. Using 182.9 cm throughout:

Rate of gain. From the 2000 baseline to Sons of Anarchy in 2011 — eleven years, most of them trained — he added roughly 17.5 lbs (7.9 kg) of lean tissue. From there to King Arthur in 2017, six more years, he added another 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg) of lean tissue, or about 1.3 lbs a year — right at the natural “1–2 lbs a year” ceiling for a lifter four-plus years in, not above it. Neither jump looks like a step change after a plateau. The one honest caveat: these points sit years apart, so we can’t rule out a faster gain concentrated in a few months of pre-filming prep followed by a slow taper — the movie-prep norm — with the years in between hiding the real shape of the curve.

What cuts the other way. Movie budgets buy dedicated trainers, chefs, and recovery that most lifters never get, which can push a genetically favored actor further than an amateur ceiling predicts.

Genetics and incentive. None of this needed to be extraordinary. A 23-year-old who starts lifting and adds well under 20 lbs of lean mass over a decade, then keeps gaining at roughly a natural pace for years after, is exactly what an ordinarily gifted natural lifter with movie-star resources looks like — no special genetic case needs to be argued. He also has an actor’s usual incentive to look good for a role, and no drug-testing regime of any kind applies to him; that raises the prior slightly but proves nothing on its own, and cuts against a career that has also asked him, repeatedly, to look gaunt and unremarkable.

We found no verified quote of Hunnam addressing the steroid question directly. What we do have is a workout routine described in his own words — “75 pull-ups, 75 dips, 150 squats, 150 pushups, and then 20 minutes of ab work” — and a dry line about diet: “I try to avoid anything fucked with by man too much.”

Verdict: likely natty, held with a hedge, not certainty. The peak FFMI sits in the “good natural” band rather than the gray zone, the rate of gain across more than a decade never clears the natural ceiling for his training age, and the repeated dramatic cuts to a genuinely thin frame argue against a physique that’s artificially maintained. What would move this: a verified pre-2011 photo or number showing the Sons of Anarchy gain was faster than estimated here, or years-apart body-fat readings tighter than the rough photo-based estimates this page relies on.

In their words

“I go into the gym and do 75 pull-ups, 75 dips, 150 squats, 150 pushups, and then 20 minutes of ab work. Done. It takes an hour; I'm in and out. I sweat the whole time.”

“I try to avoid anything fucked with by man too much.”

Common questions

Is Charlie Hunnam natty or on steroids?

This site rates Charlie Hunnam as likely natty. That is an opinion drawn from public numbers, not a statement of fact: the peak physique on this page works out to an FFMI of 23.0, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Has Charlie Hunnam ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?

Nothing of the sort turned up in the sources on this page. Had it, the verdict would read confirmed instead of likely natty.

What is Charlie Hunnam's FFMI?

About 23.0. That comes from 6'0" (182.9 cm) and 190 lbs (86 kg) at roughly 10% body fat, normalized to 1.8 m. Drug-free lifters in the Kouri 1995 study topped out near 25.
