Daniel Craig: natty or not?

Uncertain Playing James Bond across five films (2006–2021), the first to give the role a visibly trained, athletic build rather than a naturally lean one

Short answer. Verdict: uncertain. At the peak physique on this page, Daniel Craig is 5'10" (178 cm) and 180 lbs (81.6 kg) at roughly 10% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 23.3, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

No official record settles this. What follows is opinion and analysis based on public numbers — how we judge.

Daniel Craig didn’t just play an action hero — he was the first Bond to look like one on a gym floor, not just on a poster. That makes him a good test case for the method this site uses: not “does he look big,” but “how fast did the size arrive, and against what starting point.”

The baseline

Before Casino Royale, Craig had appeared in films like Tomb Raider and Layer Cake but had “never trained to this level” — by most accounts an ordinary, athletic-but-untrained build, the product of a man who’d played rugby as a teenager but had no bodybuilding background. No live source gives an exact pre-2006 weight or body-fat number, so this page uses a clearly-labeled estimate — 165 lb (75 kg) at roughly 16% body fat — as a rough stand-in for “average build, no real training,” not a documented fact. Treat every number below as anchored to that soft starting point.

Casino Royale: the first build

For his debut as Bond in 2006, Craig “bulked up significantly,” and his trainer Simon Waterson built the program around heavy weights and powerlifting-style compound lifts“extremely hard” training with heavy weights, elevated heart rate, lean muscle plus a side of cardio, by Waterson’s own description. Craig himself later put it more bluntly: asked how he trained for the role, he said simply, “It was heavy weights”.

The result, on this page’s estimate, was about 172 lb (78 kg) at 13% body fat — a gain of roughly 11 lb (4.9 kg) of fat-free mass over “several months” of training, starting from a genuine training novice in his late 30s. That sits right at the top of a first-year natural ceiling (10–12 lb), not past it. For a beginner given a full-time trainer, a controlled diet, and nothing else to do but prepare for a role, this is unremarkable.

The dip: Quantum of Solace and Cowboys & Aliens

For 2008’s Quantum of Solace, Craig deliberately dropped about 10 lb of mass, training with lighter weights and more cardio to look “a bit leaner, a bit less no-neck” than his Casino Royale debut. That puts him at roughly 162 lb (73.5 kg) — and by this page’s estimate, his fat-free mass came back down to almost exactly where the untrained 2004 baseline sat. Whatever he built for Casino Royale, he let most of it go within two years.

He went further for the 2011 non-Bond film Cowboys & Aliens, reportedly training with lighter weights and less food to look leaner and slighter on screen — the specific number circulating (around 160 lb / 72.5 kg) doesn’t trace to a source still live on the web, so this page treats it as a rough, unverified figure rather than a documented one. On that estimate, it’s his leanest point on paper since the pre-Bond baseline, and lower than the baseline in raw lean mass.

The jump: Skyfall

This is the one stretch on this page worth real scrutiny. For 2012’s Skyfall, Waterson rebuilt Craig from that slimmer Cowboys & Aliens starting point, and after “a few months of training,” reportedly had him at a body “of an athlete”. On the estimated numbers above, that’s a climb from roughly 160 lb at 15% body fat to about 180 lb at 10% body fat — call it 26 lb (11.8 kg) of estimated fat-free mass gained in a few months, while body-fat percentage also dropped. Gaining lean mass while simultaneously losing fat, on a compressed timeline, is exactly the combination this site treats as a real flag, not a footnote.

Three things temper it. First, the destination isn’t extreme: at an estimated 81.6 kg and 10% body fat, his fat-free mass index works out to about 23.3 — solidly inside the “good natural” band (22–23.5) this site uses, and nowhere near the 25 that Kouri et al. cite as a drug-free ceiling. Second, both body-fat figures (15% and 10%) are estimates from trainer quotes and press description, not measurements — a few points of error either way moves the FFMI number meaningfully. Third, Craig wasn’t rebuilding from zero: he’d already carried a bigger, trained frame in 2006 and 2008 before intentionally cutting down for one film role, so part of this “jump” is regaining a physique class his body had held within the prior six years — cheaper than new territory, even though the Skyfall estimate edges past his 2006 Casino Royale peak by around 12 lb. That last 12 lb is the part that isn’t fully explained by muscle memory.

No Time to Die: holding it at 53

For his final Bond film in 2021, at 53, Waterson shifted Craig’s training toward calisthenics, bodyweight movements, and agility work rather than heavy lifting, aiming to look “just as fit” as he had in Casino Royale at 38. By this page’s estimate, he did — his fat-free mass index here (about 22.6) is close to, even slightly above, his Casino Royale number, fifteen years and a documented testosterone decline later. That’s a real signal worth naming: holding or improving a physique deep past the point where natural hormone levels are working against you. It’s tempered by the fact that this isn’t a new peak — it’s maintenance of a physique class he’d already built repeatedly, by someone with roughly fifteen years of accumulated (if inconsistent) training experience and, by his own trainer’s account, a shift toward lower-intensity training rather than a heavier one.

Context that cuts both ways

Nothing here comes with a testing regime one way or the other — actors aren’t drug-tested for film roles, so there’s no positive test to point to and no clean test to lean on either. The incentive is real: playing Bond paid Craig enormously, and looking the part was part of the job. But every FFMI estimate across every era on this page — from 19.6 to 23.3 — stays under the “top-tier natural” line this site uses, let alone the higher bands reserved for likely-enhanced physiques. That’s not the profile of someone pushing against a ceiling; it’s the profile of a disciplined, well-coached actor doing focused, short-term prep blocks between films.

Verdict

Uncertain, leaning toward natural. The Skyfall build-up is the one real flag: fast lean-mass gain alongside fat loss is the combination this method treats seriously, and it isn’t fully resolved by “he’d done it before.” But every physique on this page, at every era, computes to an unremarkable-to-good FFMI with nothing that clears this site’s likely-enhanced bar — and the whole case rests on estimated body-fat percentages from press quotes, not measurements.

What would move this: a verified, DEXA-grade body-fat number for the Skyfall era coming in meaningfully leaner than the 10% estimate used here would push the fat-free mass estimate — and the case — higher. A verified pre-2006 photo or number showing Craig already near Casino Royale-level lean mass in his 20s or early 30s would shrink the “jump” and push this toward likely-natty instead.

In their words

“I hit the gym hard, that's really what I did.”

“always enjoyed keeping fit in-between bouts of minor alcoholism”

“It was heavy weights.”

“The workouts were a blend of powerlifting, with a lot of compound exercises thrown in. This allows you to work out extremely hard with heavy weights, and because it's so intense the heart rate is elevated. Therefore, you are working not only on the development of nice lean muscle tissue, but you're also getting a bit of cardio as well and keeping your body fat down.”

Common questions

Is Daniel Craig natty or on steroids?

This site rates Daniel Craig as uncertain. That is an opinion drawn from public numbers, not a statement of fact: the peak physique on this page works out to an FFMI of 23.3, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Has Daniel Craig ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?

Nothing of the sort turned up in the sources on this page. Had it, the verdict would read confirmed instead of uncertain.

What is Daniel Craig's FFMI?

About 23.3. That comes from 5'10" (178 cm) and 180 lbs (81.6 kg) at roughly 10% body fat, normalized to 1.8 m. Drug-free lifters in the Kouri 1995 study topped out near 25.
