Note. Competition weights are class figures; body-fat numbers are estimates. The verdict is not an estimate β it rests on three failed tests and a lifetime ban. See the methodology page for how we judge.
Ed Coan is, by most arguments, the best powerlifter who ever lived. He is also one of the most tested and most sanctioned athletes on this site.
He was suspended in 1985 for Deca-Durabolin, suspended again in 1989 after a positive test, and in 1996 tested positive at the IPF World Championships in Salzburg β earning a lifetime ban from the federation with his results struck from the record. The IPF was still enforcing consequences in 2016, barring participation in his training seminars.
Confirmed, three times over.
The numbers
At 5β6β (168 cm), competing at 100 and 110 kg, he totalled 2,463.6 lbs (1,117.5 kg) at the 1998 World Championships: a 1,019.6-lb squat, a 573.2-lb bench, and an 887.3-lb deadlift.
His FFMI reads high, but powerlifting is the one sport on this site where the physique genuinely is not the product. Nobody paid to look at Ed Coan. The number that made him famous is the total, and the total is the thing the drugs served.
What the record does not settle
Three positives across eleven years say he used. They do not say when he started, what he ran, or how much of the total belongs to the pharmacy rather than the man. Lifters who competed against him β the whole federation, in that era β were in the same testing pool.
Verdict
Confirmed β by three positive tests and an IPF lifetime ban. He never built a career on claiming otherwise.
