Lance Armstrong: natty or not?

Short answer. Verdict: confirmed. At the peak physique on this page, Lance Armstrong is 5'10" (177 cm) and 165 lbs (75 kg) at roughly 6% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 22.7, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Note. Racing weight is the listed figure; the body-fat number is an estimate. The verdict is not — it rests on the USADA case and his own admission. See the methodology page for how we judge.
Lance Armstrong is on this site as the answer to “but he doesn’t look like he’s on anything.”
He does not. He looked like a man who had been starved down to climb mountains, because that is what he was. Every gram of muscle a cyclist carries uphill is a cost. His FFMI is unremarkable and always was.
He also ran, by the anti-doping authorities’ account, one of the most organised doping programmes in the history of sport.
The record
In June 2012 USADA charged him over blood samples from 2009-2010 and teammate testimony. He chose not to contest the charges. He was stripped of everything from August 1998 onward — including all seven Tour de France titles — and banned for life, a decision the International Cycling Union upheld. The titles were never reassigned.
In January 2013 he admitted it to Oprah Winfrey, after years of denials. Asked later, in 2015, he said that if it were still 1995 he would “probably do it again.”
Confirmed.
Why this page matters more than the bodybuilders
Every open-class bodybuilder on this site is judged partly on size, because size is what their drugs buy. Armstrong’s drugs bought oxygen and recovery. Nothing about his body would have flagged him on any measurement we use here, and he passed drug tests for years.
That is the honest limit of this whole site, stated on the page where it is most obvious: the physique is evidence, not proof, and its absence is not innocence.
Verdict
Confirmed — by a completed anti-doping case, a lifetime ban, and his own admission on television.
Common questions
Is Lance Armstrong natty or on steroids?
This site rates Lance Armstrong as confirmed, the only verdict here stated as fact. It takes an admission, a failed test or an official record, and the one behind this page is cited in the sources below.
Has Lance Armstrong ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?
The record that settles this page is listed in the sources below and described in the article above. It is what makes the verdict confirmed rather than an opinion.
What is Lance Armstrong's FFMI?
About 22.7. That comes from 5'10" (177 cm) and 165 lbs (75 kg) at roughly 6% body fat, normalized to 1.8 m. Drug-free lifters in the Kouri 1995 study topped out near 25.
