Jason Momoa: natty or not?
Uncertain Aquaman in the DC films, Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, the title role in Conan the Barbarian
Short answer. Verdict: uncertain. At the peak physique on this page, Jason Momoa is 6'4" (193 cm) and 245 lbs (111 kg) at roughly 13% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 25.1, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Jason Momoa spent a decade as a working actor — lifeguard on Baywatch: Hawaii (1999), warrior-alien Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis (2005–2009) — before he became a movie physique. The interesting part of his record isn’t any single jacked photo; it’s how fast the jacked photos started arriving, and how much they come and go.
The starting frame is on the record. A press photo of him at a Seventeen magazine party in New York on 27 October 2000, captioned as the Baywatch Hawaii actor, has him at 21, a decade before Conan.
The Conan jump
Momoa was cast as Conan the Barbarian in January 2010 and started training with Eric Laciste, a Honolulu-based trainer running a high-rep, low-rest program he called AR7. Laciste later told AskMen — as quoted by multiple outlets, including The Barbell — that Momoa “came to me at 200 pounds,” and that “toward the end of the film, his weight was fluctuating between 240-247 pounds” (The Barbell). That’s roughly 200 lb (91 kg) to 245 lb (111 kg) — a 44 lb (20 kg) swing — inside a training relationship that had only been running for a matter of months.
Forty-four pounds (20 kg) of scale weight in that window is not forty-four pounds of muscle. Some of it is water, glycogen, and creatine loading; some of it, by Momoa’s own account below, is plain fat from eating whatever he wanted. But even discounting all that, an actor with no prior heavy-lifting background — his own martial-arts and stunt work on Stargate Atlantis doesn’t equal barbell training — visibly changed shape inside one shoot. That’s the kind of rate of change the natural lean-mass ceiling (roughly 1.5–2 lb (0.7–1 kg) of real muscle a month for a first-year lifter) struggles to explain on its own.
The Guinness bulk
Momoa went straight from the strict Conan diet — “boiled chicken breast… eat like a bird every two hours” by his own description — into filming Game of Thrones season 1 in Ireland, where he stopped dieting entirely: “I had Guinness, pizza, spaghetti and whatever I wanted… I gained so much weight. Later, we had to go back for a photo shoot and I was 30 pounds lighter” (TV Guide). This is useful mostly as a contrast case: it shows he can put on and take off large amounts of weight fast, but he says himself it was fat over muscle, not a new-muscle claim — weaker evidence than the Conan jump, not stronger.
The Aquaman peak
By 2018’s Aquaman, reporting on his training (Fitness Volt) puts him around 235 lb (106.6 kg), having added an estimated 25 lb (11.3 kg) of muscle for the role under a monitored macro plan meant to add size “without body fat” (Fitness Volt). This is the era people mean when they picture “Aquaman’s body” — lean, and the biggest he’d looked on screen up to that point.
The comedown
By the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom press tour in late 2023, at 44, Momoa was joking about being heavier and softer: “I mean, right now I’m 260. Would you want me on your back? The horses, they don’t want me on them” (Yahoo). Online commentary called it a “dad bod”; he didn’t dispute the number, just the framing. A visible, public de-training between roles cuts against the idea of continuous heavy PED use — someone dosing year-round tends to hold muscle even when they stop training hard — though it’s equally consistent with what he’s always said: he trains for a paycheck, not for its own sake, and lets it go the rest of the time.
The math
Height is listed at 6’4” (193 cm) almost everywhere, though Momoa himself has said 6’5” (196 cm) in at least one interview (Nicki Swift); this page uses the more commonly documented 6’4” (193 cm). Body-fat figures below are estimates from photos and described training goals, not measurements — treat the FFMI numbers as directional.
- Conan peak (245 lb (111 kg), ~13% body fat): FFMI around 25.2 — the “gray zone” band, consistent with either elite natural genetics or enhancement.
- Aquaman peak (235 lb (106.6 kg), ~12% body fat): FFMI around 24.4 — top-tier natural, just under the gray zone.
- 2023 press-tour weight (260 lb (117.9 kg), ~24% body fat): FFMI around 23.3 — unremarkable once the extra body fat is priced in.
Steroids
No failed test, court record, or on-the-record admission exists for Momoa. This research also turned up no interview where he was directly asked the steroid question — every online “was he asked about steroids” claim traced back to fitness-blog speculation, not a documented exchange, so none of it is repeated here as a quote.
Verdict
The case for scrutiny is the Conan jump: a trainer’s own account of roughly 44 lb (20 kg) gained in a short, specific window, on top of an FFMI that lands in the gray zone at that same era. The case against jumping to likely-enhanced is that no single number here clears the natural ceiling by much, the body-fat inputs are estimates, and his very public, very ordinary-looking de-training between roles is not the pattern you’d expect from sustained heavy use. This stays uncertain.
The 44 lb figure also deserves the usual warning: scale weight is mostly not muscle. Over a short bulk, a large share of it is food, water and fat, and the trainer quoting the number had every reason to quote the biggest one.
What would change our mind: a sourced weight and body-fat pair from partway through the Conan prep, which would show how much of that jump was actually lean tissue. A late-career peak that beats his Conan shape while leaner would move this the other way.
In their words
“But I'm bigger in Game of Thrones. Drogo is like 7-feet tall in the book. So after training really hard for five months, when I got to Ireland, I had Guinness, pizza, spaghetti and whatever I wanted. You put all that fat on top of the muscle and you look heavyweight. I gained so much weight. Later, we had to go back for a photo shoot and I was 30 pounds lighter.”
“I just shovel it in, and then work hard. Work hard, eat hard, play hard, just do it.”
“I mean, right now I'm 260. Would you want me on your back? The horses, they don't want me on them.”
Common questions
Is Jason Momoa natty or on steroids?
This site rates Jason Momoa as uncertain. That is an opinion drawn from public numbers, not a statement of fact: the peak physique on this page works out to an FFMI of 25.1, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.
Has Jason Momoa ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?
Nothing of the sort turned up in the sources on this page. Had it, the verdict would read confirmed instead of uncertain.
What is Jason Momoa's FFMI?
About 25.1. That comes from 6'4" (193 cm) and 245 lbs (111 kg) at roughly 13% body fat, normalized to 1.8 m. Drug-free lifters in the Kouri 1995 study topped out near 25.
