Robby Robinson answered the question himself, in detail, without being cornered. Asked about steroids, he described the afternoon it started: “About two weeks before the Mr. World, an older guy at the gym came up to me and said, ‘Well, Robby, what are you taking?’ I said, ‘Nothing.’… I took one shot of Primobolan Depot or Durabolin-50 — I remember the guy saying it was one of the two — and I won the Mr. World and all the body parts.”

Confirmed, by his own account, and with a date attached to it.

The numbers

Robinson won Mr. America, Mr. World and Mr. Universe in 1975 — the same year as that first shot. He competed at 200-215 lbs (91-93 kg) at 5’7” (170 cm), small by any later standard, and kept that physique for an absurd length of time: the first Masters Mr. Olympia in 1994, at 48, and Masters Over-50 titles in 1997 and 2000.

His FFMI here is past the drug-free ceiling our methodology page cites, which is what you would expect given what he says he took. The number that stands out is not the peak but the persistence: the same physique, competition-ready, across four decades.

The turn

Robinson stopped defending it. Since retiring in 2001 he has argued against steroid use in the sport, saying it is “taking away from the beauty of bodybuilding, the artistry of it.” He also does not pretend the drugs made him — his position has been that his rivals were taking the same things and the work decided it.

Verdict

Confirmed — on his own testimony, one of the few golden-era records specific enough to name the compound and the week. He is on this list for telling the truth about an era that mostly did not.

In their words

“About two weeks before the Mr. World, an older guy at the gym came up to me and said, 'Well, Robby, what are you taking?' I said, 'Nothing.' He said, 'Come back this afternoon. I took one shot of Primobolan Depot or Durabolin-50 – I remember the guy saying it was one of the two – and I won the Mr. World and all the body parts.'”

“it's taking away from the beauty of bodybuilding, the artistry of it”
